summer reading list

Miller got to Dig Into Reading this summer at our local Cobb County library. That was one of the first action items to cross off of our list after Memorial Day. He wasted no time putting his library swipe card to good use. Miller was so proud to collect his own brochure and bookmark to get to work. Now that he's into second grade reading material, Miller's been enjoying the Magic Tree House series. He started Dinosaurs Before Dark in his kindergarten classroom, so we checked out his own copy together to complete the rest of the chapters. It's so thrilling to see him read pages that turn into chapters.

We made it our weekly date to turn in our old books and check out new finds. Eliza Kate enjoyed tagging along and choosing books of her own. Just don't ask my two darlings to share the book return slot. The first time they returned books together, Eliza Kate let out one of the loudest shrills over Miller returning her book into the slot. Darting eyes all over the library found my two wrestling over our book bag.  Let's just say on that week, we aborted the mission empty handed without our new books. They learned the quiet voices only rule very quickly.

 There were a lot of empty spaces to fill in on his kindergarten summer book brochure. He quickly realized that chapter books take a lot longer to read and only fill up one line. Henry and Mudge was another favorite book series that he could knock out in a 1/2 hour. Being a boy, he does gravitate towards nonfiction books about cars or transportation. I made it a goal to broaden his horizons some with fictional finds:)

Little sister got into the book action too. She's a little reader in training. Anytime she spots an E or a K, she runs her finger along the word and sounds out "Eliza Kate". This little one discovered the world of Fancy Nancy & the Pinkalicious series.  She's never been the same...ever since this new passion of girly books has been ignited. Loving our mornings of book reading. It's the only way Miller earns his coveted screen time on the ipad.
